Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 1⁄4 onion, diced

  • 2 tbsp + 1 tsp oil or butter

  • 11⁄2 tsp minced garlic

  • 2 tbsp flour

  • 2 cups beef or vegetable broth

  • 1⁄2 can tomato sauce (about 71⁄2 oz)

  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning

  • 1⁄2 tsp paprika

  • pinch of salt

  • 1⁄2 tsp garlic powder

  • 8 oz pasta

  • 1⁄2 cup heavy cream or half-and-half

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. In a large skillet, over medium heat, add oil or butter and diced onion. Cook until onion is softened, about 3–4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.

  2. Sprinkle in the flour and stir continuously for about 1 minute.

  3. Slowly pour in broth, stirring to prevent lumps. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil.

  4. Add the tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, paprika, garlic powder, and pasta. Stir well to combine, then bring to a simmer. Cover and cook until the pasta is tender, stirring occasionally.

  5. While the pasta cooks, brown the ground beef in a separate skillet over medium heat. Season with pepper and a small amount of additional salt, if desired. Cook until no longer pink, then drain any excess grease.

  6. Add the cooked ground beef to the pasta mixture and stir to combine.

  7. Stir in the heavy cream or half-and-half and shredded cheese. Continue cooking over low heat until the cheese is melted and the sauce is creamy.

  8. Mix in additional salt and pepper to taste
