When we opened our first two Barrington Schools in 2014, our goal was simple: to create early learning environments where children feel safe, supported, and excited to learn. Eleven years later, that commitment has helped us grow to 11 locations across Central Ohio.
The latest chapter in our growth is the opening of our Jerome Village location. To help families get to know the location and vision behind the school better, we sat down with location owners Jon and Ryann Lorenz to learn what inspired their decision to open a Barrington School and how the experience has been so far.
On Choosing a Location
Jon and Ryann shared that they had been talking with the Barrington founders for quite some time but were waiting for the right spot to become available. When the Jerome Village site opened up, everything clicked.
“The location just made sense,” Jon shared. “I grew up on Jerome Rd; our families are right around the corner, and it’s 15 minutes from our house.”
They closed on the land nearly a year before opening, which made their first day with families even more meaningful.
On Balancing Business and Family Life
Opening a school while raising their own young children is no small task, and Jon and Ryann were honest about the support they received throughout the journey.
“We have a lot of people that believe in us,” Ryann shared. “We’re very fortunate to have been able to lean on our families, friends, and business partners as we navigated opening the School.”
Barrington’s corporate team also stepped in with hands-on help, offering key insights into everything from building design to curriculum to operational support. Their expertise made a big difference as Jon and Ryann learned the ropes of school ownership, ultimately preparing them to open confidently and intentionally.
“They have 30+ years of experience and guided us every step of the way,” explained Jon. “Their help has been invaluable.”
On Building a School They’d Want for Their Own Kids
During the conversation, one theme came up again and again. Jon and Ryann made decisions based on what they would want for their own children.
“As parents of a four- and three-year-old, we are the target market,” explained Jon. “Throughout this whole journey, we've tried to have a mindset of what we would want for our own kids.”
Here’s how that thinking translated: A Warm, Welcoming Building
As Jon described it, “The building itself is beautiful, it's new, it's bright… I feel like when people walk in, they're genuinely happy to be there.”
That feeling is the result of several thoughtful design choices, with one example being the indoor play area. Knowing how inconsistent Ohio weather can be, Jon and Ryann wanted children to have another place to move and explore.
“We wanted kids to have space outside the classroom to move around when it’s too hot or too cold out,” Jon shared. “An indoor play area gives them that.”
Staff That Love Working With Children Jon and Ryann emphasized that they didn’t want to hire just to hire. They were very intentional in finding educators who choose early childhood education because they love it, not simply because they want a job. They also understand how much parents and children value consistency, so their goal has been to build a team that stays and grows with the school.
