What is Play-Based Learning?

Playtime might look like all fun and games, but there’s also something pretty amazing happening beneath the surface. Every block tower, every pretend tea party, and every game of chase is full of learning moments that help children make sense of the world around them. 


Through play, children become curious little investigators, leading their own learning and finding joy in doing so. This approach is known as play-based learning, and it is a core part of how meaningful learning experiences are created during the early years.

The Science Behind Play-Based Learning

When children play, they’re actively testing ideas, taking risks, solving problems, and stretching their imaginations. Research shows that these experiences in early childhood don’t just support intellectual development, but help to build confidence, persistence, and social and emotional growth.

Play-based learning ties in with the very core of our philosophy here at Barrington Schools: to nurture the whole child.

How Play-Based Learning Shows Up in Our Classrooms

When you visit any of our locations, you’ll see that our thoughtfully planned curriculum is complemented by meaningful play experiences, helping children build skills and curiosity that support lifelong learning.

"We believe the greatest value comes from a well-rounded curriculum that incorporates play-based learning,” shared Ashley Jones, Curriculum Coordinator at Barrington Schools.

In our infant room, this might look like a child tapping a toy drum and discovering cause and effect with each sound they make. For toddlers, it could be carefully stacking blocks and figuring out through trial and error how to build a tower that stays standing. And for preschoolers, pretend play gives them the chance to create stories and take on roles, teaching them to communicate and collaborate with one another.   


Sometimes this play is completely child-led, giving children the freedom to choose what they explore and explore at their own pace. This kind of unstructured play encourages independence, creativity, and confidence as children follow their own curiosity.

Other times, teachers gently guide the experience.

“Sometimes our teachers might ask questions while kids are playing to help teach a specific lesson,” explained Ashley.  

For instance, a teacher might encourage a child who is building a block tower to think about how to make it taller or stronger, helping deepen their critical thinking in the moment.

How We Promote Play-Based Learning

For children to engage in play that supports key developmental skills, they need a classroom intentionally designed to invite exploration and spark imagination. In our classrooms, we give the kids in our care the space to explore and engage with the world around them so that learning happens in a natural and exciting way.


It's important to note that not every learning moment will happen through play, and not every moment of play will teach a lesson. But when used correctly, we can use play to create valuable learning opportunities that help children build confidence, curiosity, and a genuine love of learning.
